Contact Lens Complications

There are a wide variety of possible contact complications.  Any red eye of a patient wearing contact lenses should be considered to be an emergency.  From the first irritation of the eye until penetration of the cornea with contents of the eye coming out can be as little as 24 hours.

Diagnosis of any one contact lens complication can be determined by the location of the problem.

Eyelid

  • Ptosis (Droopy eyelid)

Conjunctiva

  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) - itching and mucous build-up
  • Superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) – red irritated eye
  • Allergies – itching

Cornea

  • Corneal abrasion (scratched cornea) – pain and redness
  • Contact lens acute red eye (CLARE) – red eye, pain and decreased vision
  • Keratitis – irritation and redness
  • Corneal ulcer – irritation, redness, white spot on cornea
  • Corneal neovascularization – due to lack of oxygen to cornea
  • Corneal edema (swelling) – leads to decreased vision
