Doctors For Visual Freedom is a non-surgical ophthalmology practice conveniently located inside of the John Hancock Center on North Michigan Avenue. It is run by Dr. Mark Golden. He and his team work hard to provide the highest level of care possible. They provide general eye care, emergency services, designer eye wear, contact lenses, pediatric care, Botox, Fillers and Cosmoceuticals.
The eye is the “window to the body” in that a wide variety of diseases are seen in the eye. These include diabetes, hypertension, collagen vascular diseases, brain tumors and headaches to name only a few.
Dr. Golden received his Bachelor’s Degree in biology from The University of Chicago in 1977, and was awarded their first-ever, pre-doctoral Master’s Degree in Ophthalmology. His Doctorate Degree was awarded at St. Louis University in 1984, where he continued with his internship and residency.
In 1988, he joined the cornea practice of Eye Surgeons and Consultants on the north side of Chicago. Under Dr. Golden’s leadership they expanded to a total of eight offices in Chicago and Southern Wisconsin. He specialized in small incision cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Golden was always interested in refractive surgery and trained in Radial Keratotomy (RK) in 1989, but believed that its utility was limited. In 1991 he took the first course on the then new ALK machine (a precursor of today’s LASIK technology. Later in 1991 he performed the first ALK procedures in the Mid-West.
Because of Dr. Golden’s extensive experience with the ALK microkeratome, he was called upon to introduce and teach LASIK to international surgeons before it was approved by the FDA for use in the United States. Subsequently he trained hundreds of surgeons in the techniques of LASIK. He was employed by a variety of Laser companies to open more than a dozen LASIK centers across the United States – training surgeons, staffs, and setting protocols. He has lectured at national and international meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, International Society of Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Optometry, and American Optometric Association as well as providing education to local eye doctors for many years. Dr. Golden performed more than 24,000 Laser Vision Correction
In addition to Laser Vision Correction, he has long been interested in improvement of facial aesthetics and has been administering Cosmetic Botox and Fillers since 2003. Now his practice is approximately half ophthalmology and the other half is involved in helping people look their best using a combination of Botox, Fillers and specialty products.
Unlike many practices, Dr. Golden believes that each person should have the chance to have all of their questions and concerns addressed. There is a strict no wait policy at Doctors For Visual Freedom and consistent five star reviews show the high level of care provided by Dr. Golden and his staff.
Richard B. Foulkes MD grew up in Washington State. During the Vietnam War, he honorably served in the Navy and the Marines.
After the military, Dr. Foulkes graduated Cum Laude from Tufts University in Boston. He then attended Rush Medical College in Chicago and graduated in the top 10% of his class. He then attended Cornell Medical College in New York for his residency in ophthalmology. He studied with the well-known Dr. David Patton and was honored by becoming the in his 3rd year of training. Dr. Foulkes met the founder of the LASIK procedure, Dr. Lucio Burato. He was quickly convinced that LASIK would change the world, allowing for the incredible precision of the laser combined with the “flap” to allow the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Since 1997, Dr. Foulkes has become an influencer of doctors around the World through his research, writing and lectures. He has performed more than 48,000 LASIK procedures and 20,000 cataract procedures. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
He now performs cataract and refractive surgery for the patients of Doctors For Visual Freedom.
